FAkes

The number one concern to collectors and especially those just starting out today is the growing amount of Fakes or Reproductions on the market today! Where there is a buck to be made there will always be a fake or reproduction. Reproductions are not a bad thing and sometimes they are of better quality than the real thing, but it is those who knowingly choose to deceive and try and pass off a reproduction as the real McCoy! My reasons for posting this page is not to discredit someone's work, but to inform the masses and then it is your choice to choose.

SYLVAC

Sylvac has recently come into the limelight as a company bought the rights to use the Sylvac name and are producing reproductions of previous originals and flooding the market. These pots mimic the real McCoy! Although it is your choice which you prefer, I thought it necessary to highlight this to you!

How to tell:

From what I have seen and heard their are several ways to tell. On the bottom of the pot the rim is extra chalky/powdery and the white rubs off. Also the markings on the base seem to be written in freehand, sought of etched in and not professionally printed and they generally seem to be smaller than the original piece. Also if you see the number #30598 scribbled on the bottom this is the date the company first registered the SylvaC name. GUINNESS

Guinness by Carlton Ware is another good one for copies or reproductions, when the factory went under the moulds were left behind and production began again producing the Guinness figures. To the collector this is more obvious as the colours on the figures are more gordy and and bright. You can see them being auctioned and sometimes they are referred to as "modern" pieces.
